DO YOU KNOW THIS?
The total square area of the world is 197 million sq. miles. Of that, approximately 30%, or 57.3 million sq. miles is the land area. The entire area of Sri Lanka is 25,332 sq. miles which works out to an infitesimal 0.04% of the world's land area! Yet, Sri Lanka has been well blessed where culture and history are concerned. The latest listings as at june 2010 - by the World Heritage Committee, states there are 908 properties across the Earth inscribed on the World Heritage sites. Remarkably, for a tiny island, and trying hard to shake off the tag of a third world nation, Sri Lanka has 8 such listed sites, or a disproportionate but impressive 1% of the World Heritage spots. They are Sacred city of Anuradhapura, Ancient City of Polonnaruwa, Ancient City of Sigiriya, Sinharaja Forest reserve, Central Highlands, Sacred City of Kandy, Old Town of Galle and its Fortifications and Golden Temple of Dambulla.
